Adventurous Iceland Waterfall Elopement on Summer Solstice

Stephen and Sophie’s love story began in college, where they met through mutual friends. From the start, they shared a connection that only grew stronger year after year. After getting engaged, they celebrated their new chapter with a memorable trip to the majestic redwoods on the west coast. So, when it came time to plan their elopement, it was only fitting that they chose another epic location — Iceland!

Iceland is a land of otherworldly beauty, with awe-inspiring vistas at every turn. However, with its breathtaking beauty comes the challenge of unpredictable weather. For adventurous elopements, being resilient and adaptable is crucial, as Stephen and Sophie quickly learned.

Stephen and Sophie had originally planned an afternoon or evening ceremony. But as the date approached, the weather forecast predicted days of relentless rain. Instead of letting this dampen their spirits, they decided to embrace the change and switched their plans to a sunrise ceremony.

During the summer solstice in Iceland, the sun barely sets, providing a unique opportunity to take advantage of the extended daylight hours. This unique phenomenon worked in their favor, allowing them to make the most of their special day. By starting early, they could also avoid the crowds that flock to Southern Iceland’s popular spots.

Their elopement day began with getting-ready photos at 3 a.m. Despite the early hour, excitement filled the air as they prepared for their adventure. We made our way to Kvernufoss, a breathtaking waterfall that served as their ceremony location. Thanks to their early start, they had the entire place to themselves, making the moment even more special.

Stephen and Sophie exchanged vows and rings with the magnificent waterfall as their backdrop. The intimate setting, surrounded by Iceland’s stunning scenery, made for a truly magical experience. After the ceremony, we took advantage of the isolation, capturing more photos around the waterfall and exploring the surrounding area.

Their adventure continued with visits to more of Iceland’s iconic landscapes. Next, we stopped at Skogafoss, one of the most impressive waterfalls in the country, before heading to Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach. Known for its unique rock formations and striking black sand, the beach provided a dramatic and picturesque setting for their day.

Our final destination was Hjörleifshöfði, where we took photos amidst the blooming lupine fields. The vibrant purple flowers are a popular sight in June, contrasting beautifully with the lush green Icelandic landscape.

To honor Icelandic culture, Stephen and Sophie ended their day with an Icelandic happy marriage cake, Iceland’s traditional take on a classic wedding cake. The day turned out to be even more amazing than they had imagined, proving that sometimes, unexpected changes can lead to unforgettable experiences.
