Beautiful Oregon Coast Engagement Session at Hug Point near Cannon Beach

Madeline and Spencer were just the sweetest and cutest couple. They were on a weekend getaway trip to the Oregon Coast from Portland where they live. Little did Madeline know, Spencer had quite the surprise planned. During their weekend trip, Spencer popped the question to Madeline with a surprise proposal. Not only that, but he also surprised her by booking a surprise engagement session! Romantic much?! Madeline had no idea and was not expecting it at all! It was such a sweet surprise and such a thoughtful way to celebrate their new engagement in Oregon.

We started their engagement session at Hug Point, one of my favorite locations along the coast just south of Cannon Beach. Hug Point is a 43-acre state park with secluded sandy beaches, rugged coast, and sea caves (read more about this breathtaking engagement location below!) and the perfect spot for an engagement session or elopement.

Their incredibly adorable and fluffy dog also tagged along for the shoot which I loved (fur babies are always welcome to join in the fun!). We were treated to blue skies and sunshine with a slight haze cast along the shore. It was a beautiful fall day. We spent some time frolicking along the beach with their pup and walking along the rocky coastline before heading to another location nearby.

Our next location was a magical cliffside location that is just stunning. I try to keep this spot a secret and only share it with my couples so if you’re interested, let me know! Perched high above the Pacific Ocean, the views here cannot be beat. We arrived there just as the sun was beginning to set which made for the most gorgeous golden glow. We walked along the edge of the Pacific and captured some sweet moments. Madeline and Spencer were total pros and their pup was a trooper! As the sun slipped beneath the horizon, we ended the day with the most stunning sunset. It was such a perfect day!

Engagement sessions along the Northern Oregon Coast

The northern coast of Oregon boasts golden stretches of beach as far as your eye can see, towering sea stacks, and rocky shoreline. Plus, it’s just about an hour from Portland making it an easy trip from the city.

Where to Stay: Cannon Beach, Seaside, or Arch Cape

Cannon Beach: A quaint coastal town nestled along the Pacific and home to the infamous Haystack Rock. The well-known basalt sea stack towers over 200 feet above the sandy stretch of beach. Once named one of the world’s most 100 beautiful places by National Geographic, Cannon Beach is the perfect place to stay. With a lively art scene, cozy coffee shops, and seaside restaurants, there’s plenty to enjoy while you’re in town.

Seaside: To the north of Cannon Beach is the lovely coastal town of Seaside. The town has been a popular beach destination since the 1870s. With it comes vast stretches of sandy beaches and a lively downtown with plenty of restaurants and shops to keep you busy. Another great option if you’re looking for a place to stay along the coast!

Arch Cape: A few minutes south of Cannon Beach is a residential community called Arch Cape. There are some really awesome Airbnb rentals in this area with oceanfront views and private beaches. Some of my favorite houses to capture getting ready photos and private wedding ceremonies is in this area. You can see an example from this Intimate Oregon Coast wedding at Casa Pacifica. This house has a hot tub, steps from the beach, and is dog friendly!

Where to Elope: Hug Point (and secret spots!)

Not only is Hug Point beautiful, but it also has a pretty cool history. Stagecoaches used to travel up and down the beach and during low tide, they were forced to “hug” the cliffs as they traveled along the coastline. Today, when the waters recede during low tide, a beautiful golden sanded beach is uncovered. The secluded cove is one of my favorite places for engagement sessions and elopements. There are also a few other locations that I keep top secret and only share with my couples, so definitely contact me if you’re interested in a more secluded location on the Oregon coast!

When to Elope: Spring through Fall

Summer and early fall are ideal on the Oregon coast for sunny skies and warmer temperatures, but if you’re wanting those moody Pacific Northwest vibes you might want to consider a winter elopement! Really any time of the year is a great time to get married in Oregon. It just depends on the vibe you’re wanting and I’m prepared to shoot in ANY kind of weather!
