How to Elope in Iceland
Iceland, with its dramatic landscapes, enchanting waterfalls, and serene glaciers, is a dream destination for couples wanting an unforgettable elopement. From towering cliffs to black sand beaches, Iceland offers the perfect backdrop for an adventurous yet intimate wedding experience. This guide will walk you through everything you need to know about eloping in Iceland—from choosing the right season to planning activities, booking vendors, and more.
1. Decide when to elope in Iceland
Choosing the right season for your Icelandic elopement depends on the kind of experience you want. Each season offers its own unique beauty, but there are practical considerations to keep in mind as well.
Spring (April–June)
Spring in Iceland is a time of renewal. The days are getting longer, and you’ll have more daylight to enjoy the landscapes. The snow begins to melt, creating powerful, majestic waterfalls. Temperatures are cooler, but the countryside bursts with greenery and wildflowers. Spring is also a quieter time for tourism, so you may get to enjoy more privacy for your ceremony.
Summer (June–August)
Summer is the most popular time to elope in Iceland. With nearly 24 hours of daylight during the height of summer, you can plan a sunset ceremony at midnight or explore the country late into the evening. Temperatures are milder, and the weather is more predictable, making it ideal for outdoor ceremonies. However, keep in mind that this is the peak tourist season, so some locations might be busier.
Fall (September–October)
Fall offers beautiful autumnal colors, especially around the countryside. The crowds begin to thin out, and you can still enjoy relatively mild weather. You’ll also have an opportunity to witness the Northern Lights, as the nights become longer and darker. If you love the idea of cooler weather, vibrant foliage, and fewer crowds, fall might be the perfect season for you.
Winter (November–March)
Winter elopements in Iceland are magical, but they also come with some challenges. Snow blankets the country, creating a stunning winter wonderland, and the Northern Lights are visible on clear nights. However, some locations might be harder to access due to snow and ice, and the weather can be unpredictable. The short days also mean limited daylight, but the beauty of Iceland’s winter landscapes makes it all worth it for couples who want a cozy, intimate winter elopement.
2. Choose an Iceland elopement location
Iceland is full of awe-inspiring landscapes perfect for an elopement. Here are some of my favorite locations for an Icelandic elopement.
Kvernufoss
A hidden gem, this waterfall is located near Skogafoss but is much less crowded. Its cascading water creates a dramatic setting for your ceremony. One of the things that makes it really unique though is that you can walk behind it!
Skogafoss
This is one of Iceland’s most famous waterfalls, and for good reason. Skogafoss is breathtakingly powerful. Its wide cascade makes it a popular choice, but early mornings or off-peak times offer more privacy.
Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach
Known for its volcanic black sands and towering basalt columns, Reynisfjara offers a striking and otherworldly backdrop for an elopement. Just be mindful of the powerful waves and weather conditions here.
Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon and Diamond Beach
This glacier lagoon is full of icebergs that float serenely in the blue water, while Diamond Beach is scattered with crystal-like chunks of ice. Together, they create a unique and visually stunning location for your ceremony.
Hangandifoss Waterfall – Mulagljufur Canyon
If you’re looking for something off the beaten path, Mulagljufur Canyon offers a secluded, dramatic landscape. Hangandifoss is a hidden waterfall within this canyon, which makes for a peaceful and intimate elopement spot.
3. Book your Iceland elopement vendors
To bring your elopement vision to life, you’ll need the help of some skilled professionals. Although you don’t need as many vendors as you would fro a traditional wedding, there are a few key vendors I recommend couples consider.
Photographer
Your elopement in Iceland deserves to be beautifully captured. Look for a photographer experienced in Icelandic landscapes to ensure your photos reflect the breathtaking scenery. Many elopement photographers in Iceland (including me!) offer packages that include multiple locations and day-long adventures.
Officiant
An officiant is essential to legally marry you in Iceland. Some couples bring their own officiant from home, while others hire a local Icelandic officiant who is familiar with the country’s laws.
Hair and Makeup
Iceland’s weather can be unpredictable, so it’s worth hiring a local hair and makeup artist who knows how to work with the unique conditions. They can help you stay flawless, even in wind, rain, or snow.
Florist
While Iceland is known for its wild beauty, you might want to add a personal touch with a custom bouquet or floral arrangement. Many florists can incorporate native Icelandic plants and flowers into your design for a more natural feel.
Other Vendors
Depending on your needs, you may also want to hire a videographer, caterer, or transportation company. For example, some locations are only accessible by super jeeps, so transportation logistics should be considered in your planning.
4. Book your Iceland travel accommodations
Planning your travel and accommodations is another key step in your elopement adventure. Here’s what you need to know.
How to Get There
Most international travelers will fly into Keflavik International Airport, which is about a 45-minute drive from Reykjavik. You can rent a car to explore the island, which I highly recommend as it allows you to see more of the beautiful Icelandic countryside, and especially if you plan to visit remote elopement locations.
Where to Stay
For those eloping near Skogafoss or Kvernufoss, consider staying in the nearby town of Vik, which has several charming guesthouses and hotels to choose from. If you’re near Jökulsárlón, accommodations like Fosshotel Glacier Lagoon offer proximity to the Glacier Lagoon and Diamond Beach. Reykjavik also offers a range of hotels for couples who prefer a city as their home base.

Ice Caving: Explore the inside of Iceland’s glaciers by taking an ice-caving tour, which offers a unique look at the island’s natural beauty.
Helicopter Tours: For an unforgettable view of Iceland’s landscapes, book a helicopter tour to see waterfalls, volcanoes, and glaciers from above.
6. How to elope legally in Iceland
Lastly, you’ll want to make sure your Icelandic elopement is legal. To legally elope in Iceland, you’ll need to gather some important documents and follow these steps.
Documents Required: Both parties must provide passports, birth certificates, and proof of marital status (e.g., a divorce certificate if previously married). These documents should be sent to Iceland’s National Registry at least three weeks before your elopement.
Marriage License: You’ll also need a marriage license from the District Commissioner in the area where you plan to elope. Once your ceremony is complete, your officiant will file your marriage certificate with the National Registry.
Witnesses: Iceland requires two witnesses for legal weddings. If you’re eloping alone, your photographer or guide can often serve as witnesses.
